Learn Quran online as an adult: starting late is fine
Many adults quietly wish they could read the Quran properly, or recite with more confidence in salah, but feel it is too late or too embarrassing to start. It is neither. Here is a practical guide to learning the Quran online as an adult, from Pakistan or abroad.
It is not too late
There are many reasons adults never learned to read the Quran well. Some grew up where there was no teacher nearby. Some started as children but stopped when school got busy. Some were taught to read quickly but never corrected, and now they are unsure whether their reading is right. Others reverted to Islam or married into a Muslim family and are starting from zero.
Whatever the reason, adults have real advantages as learners. They understand why they are learning, they can follow explanations, and they can practise on their own. With a patient teacher and a little daily practice, an adult can make steady, meaningful progress at any age.
Where adults usually start
The right starting point depends on what you can already do. In the 3-day free trial, the teacher listens to you read, privately, and suggests one of these:
Complete beginners
If you cannot yet read Arabic letters, start with Noorani Qaida: the alphabet, vowel marks and joining. Our article on Noorani Qaida as the first step explains what each stage covers.
Can read, but slowly or unsure
If you can read but hesitate or are not confident it is correct, Nazra builds fluency with a teacher correcting every line.
Read fluently, want to recite correctly
If you read comfortably but want your recitation to be correct and beautiful, the Tajweed course covers makharij, noon and meem rules, madd and waqf.
Want to memorise
Some adults want to memorise the surahs they recite in salah, Juz Amma or more. Hifz works for selected surahs as well as the full Quran.
Getting past the hesitation
The biggest obstacle for most adults is not ability; it is embarrassment. Reading slowly, or being corrected, can feel uncomfortable when you are a parent, a professional or the eldest in the family. A few things help:
- Classes are one-to-one and private. No one else hears your mistakes.
- Teachers who teach adults are used to beginners of every age. Being corrected is simply how everyone learns.
- You set the pace. If a letter or rule needs another week, it gets another week.
- Sisters can choose a female teacher, and brothers a male teacher. Read more about learning with a female teacher online.
Many adults find that the first class is the hardest step. After that, it quickly becomes a peaceful part of the day.
Fitting classes around work and family
Adult life is busy, so the class has to fit the life, not the other way round. Because we teach 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, you can choose a time that is genuinely free:
- Before work, after Fajr, when the house is quiet.
- Lunch break, from the office or the car, with headphones.
- Evening, after the children are asleep.
- Late night, for shift workers, doctors and those working with clients abroad.
Thirty minutes is short enough to fit most days. Our standard plan is Monday to Friday; if weekends or fewer days suit you better, talk to our team. A phone and a stable internet connection are all you need.
How to practise as an adult
Ten to fifteen minutes of practice a day makes a real difference between classes.
- Practise at the same time every day, for example straight after a prayer, so it becomes automatic.
- Read aloud, even quietly. Reading in your head does not train your tongue.
- Read slowly and correctly rather than quickly.
- Use what you learn: recite newly corrected surahs in your salah.
- Keep a small notebook of the corrections your teacher gives you and read it before class.
If you have children learning too, practising alongside them can be motivating for both of you.
Setting realistic goals
It helps to have a clear goal, and to keep it realistic. Good first goals for adults are: reading the Qaida to the end, reading Surah Al-Fatiha and the short surahs of salah with correct pronunciation, or reading one page of the Mushaf smoothly. Longer goals might be completing a full reading of the Quran, reciting with Tajweed in taraweeh at home, or memorising Juz Amma.
How long each takes varies a lot from person to person, so we will not promise a timetable. Your teacher can tell you what the next milestone is and how you are progressing towards it.
Adults abroad
Many Pakistanis abroad, in the UK, USA, Canada, the Gulf and elsewhere, take classes for themselves as well as their children. Classes run in your local time, and teachers explain in Urdu or English. Many find it a way to stay connected to the Quran and to the way it was taught back home, even with a demanding job in a different time zone.
